PartagerDepuis près de 20 ans, Oliver Huntemann traverse le paysage électronique en nous gratifiant de ses plus belles mélodies. Il a collaboré avec des artistes de renommée mondiale tels que Dubfire, Bodzin ou bien André Winter. Auteur de titres sublimes comme "Rikarda", "Dios" et tant d'autres, il est également reconnu comme un remixeur talentueux. Oliver nous a fait l'amitié de répondre à nos quelques questions, histoire d'en savoir un peu plus sur lui et juste avant la sortie en novembre 2011 de son prochain album "Paranoïa". Enjoy.

Clubxtrem) Bonjour Oliver, Clubxtrem est très heureux que tu aies accepté cette interview, pourrais-tu te présenter rapidement ?
Oliver Huntemann) Bonjour, je m'appelle Oliver Huntemann, je suis avant tout deejay, producteur de musique et surtout globe-trotter. 
Clubxtrem) En novembre, tu vas sortir ton nouvel album "Paranoia" sur ton label Ideal Audio. Quelle a été ton approche pour la conception de ce nouvel opus ?
Oliver Huntemann) J'ai commencé à travailler sur l'album avec la ferme intention de combiner de forts contrastes. Mon thème conceptuel intitulé "Paranoïa" est basé là-dessus. Alors déjà, les pistes de l'album sont plus sombres que d'habitude. Ensuite le thème de la paranoïa est très large et donc l'intérêt de porter ma musique sur ce thème a été très enrichissant, notamment la construction de la track "In time of trouble" sans beat. J'ai vraiment repenser ma manière de travailler... Heureusement, j'ai été épargné par le syndrome de la paranoïa !
J'ai adoré retranscrire ce thème en musique. Aussi, je peux d'ores et déjà vous révéler qu'il y a aura un DVD bonus incluant des vidéos fantastiques illustrant toutes les tracks de l'album. Au cours de mes voyages, j'ai rencontré beaucoup d'artistes différents et je me suis dit qu'il fallait faire appel à mes producteurs préférés pour qu'ils ajoutent leurs idées illuminées à mon album. Dès le départ, ils ont tous été partants par le projet (avec une certaine excitation) et se sont mis à travailler aussitôt... Le résultat : ce n'est pas moins de 13 vidéos et courts-métrages stupéfiants, réalisés par des artistes internationaux tels que Manuel Nogueira de Sao Paulo, Seb Rekorder de Bruxelles, Boris Nikolov de Sofia et de nombreux autres artistes...
Clubxtrem) Est-ce qu'au cours de ta carrière tu as été influencé par d'autres artistes ? Notamment ceux avec qui tu as souvent collaboré comme Stephan Bodzin et André Winter ? Retrouve-t-on toutes ces influences dans ton dernier album ?
Oliver Huntemann) Pas vraiment, j'essaie d'avancer seul et de faire un travail sur moi-même. Je continue tout de même à travailler avec André Winter, alors forcément nous sommes influencés l'un par l'autre. Pour l'album, je ne me suis pas contenté de créer 2 tracks orientées dancefloor, j'ai eu l'opportunité de donner une autre personnalité de moi-même. J'ai fait un gros travail de sound design pour cet album et j'ai été surpris lorsque l'album fut fini car malgré tout, j'avais encore plein d'idées mais quelques fois il faut savoir dire stop, sinon c'est une histoire sans fin...
Clubxtrem) Lorsque tu es dans ton studio, comment est organisé ton travail ? Est-ce que tu as une méthode particulière ? Commences-tu par créer une rythmique ou bien travailles-tu en premier tes sons de basse ou de synthé ?
Oliver Huntemann) Tout dépend de mes humeurs. Souvent je commence par un kickdrum et une ligne de basse. Parfois des idées différentes me poussent à créer une piste dancefloor puis pour plein de raisons différentes, cela partait sur tout autre chose. Toutes mes tracks sont différentes et ma façon de concevoir mes compositions l'est également.
Clubxtrem) Tu as une signature musicale particulière et reconnue par tous, tu sembles toujours être à la recherche du son qui fera la différence, notamment dans les basses et les leads. Pour cette approche, sur quel support travailles-tu, synthés ? VST ?
Oliver Huntemann) Ce sont des remarques intéressantes, merci. Alors, je perfectionne "le plus possible" mes tracks pour leur donner cette signature sonore, même si je fais de la musique underground. Mais vous avez raison mes outils habituels sont une forte ligne de basse et de puissants leads. Sinon, je ne travaille pas avec des synthétiseurs, j'utilise essentiellement le séquenceur Logic d'Apple et des VSTs. C'est très confortable de travailler avec.
Dans mon studio je reste toujours attaché à mes vieux synthés et mes boites à rythme mais tout est débranché. En y repensant j'ai tout de même connecté mon Roland TR-909 pour "Paranoïa" et pour "In time of trouble". Il n'y a pas de meilleur façon de modifier le "Snappy" et le "Roll" qu'avec la machine elle-même, si les potentiomètres fonctionnent encore.
Clubxtrem) D'ailleurs est-ce que tu as des synthés favoris avec lesquels tu adores travailler ?
Oliver Huntemann) Oui et particulièrement le Arturia, Albino et ceux de Logic.
Clubxtrem) Aujourd'hui, énormément de personnes travaillent uniquement en software. Que penses-tu des personnes qui travaille avec aucun synthé hardware et est-ce pour toi moins crédible ?
Oliver Huntemann) C'est comme les set-ups deejay aujourd'hui, chaque artiste peut utiliser ce qu'il souhaite, l'important c'est la créativité et non la technique. Certains préfèrent travailler avec leur portable et d'autres avec des synthés Moog, des tables analogiques... Peu importe le matériel si le résultat est formidable.
Clubxtrem) Quels conseils donnerais-tu aux personnes qui voudraient se lancer dans la production ou le deejaying ?
Oliver Huntemann) Pensez et prévoyez une configuration limitée et précise ! Familiarisez-vous avec votre matos et vos équipements puis pratiquer, pratiquer et pratiquer... 
Clubxtrem) Tu tournais avant énormément en deejay set et récemment, nous avons pu découvrir depuis quelques temps ton live pour lequel tu utilises la technologie Reactable. C'est très surprenant à première vue, comment as-tu mis en place ce live et surtout comment te sers-tu de cet outil ?
Oliver Huntemann) Il y a environ un an, pendant la conception de l'album, je voulais préparer quelque chose de spécial pour sa sortie. Je savais qu'un prototype appelé Reactable avait été utilisé il y a quelques années lors d'un concert de Björk et je suis entré en contact avec les développeurs à Barcelone. Deux semaines plus tard, je leur rendais visite pour qu'il me montre les résultats de leur recherche. J'ai immédiatement su que ce n'était pas qu'un gadget et que je voulais jouer avec ! Le Reactable est un nouvel instrument de musique électronique avec un design simple et intuitif, il permet aux musiciens d'expérimenter le son, de changer sa structure, de contrôler ses paramètres et d'être créatif d'une façon directe, du jamais vu. 
Il utilise une interface de table tangible, ce qui permet aux artistes de contrôler le système tactilement et en manipulant des objets. L'instrument se présente sous forme de table lumineuse translucide et ronde. On lui positionne sur sa surface des cubes et en les retournant, les reliant les uns aux autres, on peut combiner différents éléments comme des synthétiseurs ou créer des effets de boucles, des éléments de contrôle pour au final "jouer" une composition unique et flexible. Inspiré des synthétiseurs analogiques modulaires tels que ceux développés par Bob Moog au début des années 1960, les cubes représentent les blocs de construction de la musique électronique, chacun ayant une fonctionnalité différente dans la production du son ou du traitement d'effet.
D'un autre côté, c'est un peu comme du deejaying : on retrouve la combinaison de boucles, d'effets et de filtres, comme on le souhaite. L'attraction est là, bien sûr, l'aspect visuel du Reactable compte énormément. C'est pourquoi on transfert les vidéos en direct sur grand écran. Enfin, je joue dans une cage de lumière ce qui donne davantage de dimension au spectacle !
Clubxtrem) Après la sortie de ton nouvel album, quels sont tes projets pour 2012 ?
Oliver Huntemann) Jusqu'à l'été 2012, j'ai une tournée mondiale de prévue en live ainsi que des dates en dj set. J'ai peur de ne plus avoir de temps pour moi cette année ! De plus, nous avons prévu (avec Dubfire) de continuer notre série "Elements" après "Fuego" et "Terra". Il nous reste "Aqua" et "Air" à réaliser et j'espère pouvoir les enchainer rapidement mais bon, il n'est pas évident de faire coïncider nos emplois du temps pour travailler en studio. A côté de cela, j'ai un projet ambitieux comme celui d'enregistrer le "Play 4 live Mix", je pense viser l'Australie ou l'Asie !
Clubxtrem) Avais-tu déjà entendu parler de Clubxtrem, si oui comment trouves-tu le site ?
Oliver Huntemann) Honnêtement non, mais je vois qu'il couvre énormément de thèmes musicaux, ce qui me parait plus qu'essentiel aujourd'hui, plus que Facebook et Tweeter !

Clubxtrem) Hello Oliver, Clubxtrem is very happy that you are accepted this interview, could you introduce yourself quickly ?
Oliver Huntemann) I am Oliver Huntemann, disc-jockey, electronic music producer and globetrotter.
Clubxtrem) In november, you will get your new album "Paranoia" on your label, Ideal Audio. What was your approach to the design of this album ?
Oliver Huntemann) I already started working on the album with the intention getting more extreme than before, combining stronger contrasts. The theme Paranoia contains this as lot and soon it grew to a concept. It's not that the tracks became darker than previous stuff of mine but the inner conflicts, the suspense as soon as the highs and lows of a 'paranoia' provide a wide and interesting range to make music of. It was a lot of fun working on tracks such as "In Times Of Trouble", which manages to work peak time in the club completely without beats. It's dramaturgy has to build in a very different way than beat-based tracks. Luckily I personally have been spared from paranoid states so far. I just liked the ideal of converting it into an album concept. I'm also very happy to announce that there will be a bonus-dvd including fantastic videos of all tracks in the cd package. I always meet a lot of different artists during my travels and I thought it might be a good idea asking some of my favourite video producers to put their hands on tracks of mine. They all were excited and started working. The results are thirteen top videos and short movies made by international artists such as Manuel Nogueira from Sao Paulo, Seb Rekorder from Brussels, Boris Nikolov from Sofia and many others.
Clubxtrem) Do during your career you have been influenced by other artists ? Including those with whom you have often worked as Bodzin and André Winter? Do you find all these influences in your last album ?
Oliver Huntemann) Not really, I always try to make steps forward and being concentrated on myself although I still work with the furious André Winter and we naturally get influenced by each other all the time we are working together. The work on and for a long-player is a particular chance for an artist to surrender to something. I didn't need to reduce myself to just two dancefloor tracks and had the opportunity to give another side of mine more space too. That went up to the point of making downbeats and orchestral sound-collages for Paranoia. I was kind of surprised when the album was finished, still in the mood creating more tracks. All went that well and I had many more ideas. But it's important to say stop at a particular point if you don't want to work on a never-ending story.
Clubxtrem) When you're in your studio, how organized your work ? Do you have a particular method ? Do you begin by creating a rhythm or do you work in your first bass or synth sounds ?
Oliver Huntemann) That depends on my personal mood. Mostly it starts with a kickdrum and a bassline but sometimes ideas grow different than creating a dancefloor track and then I get inspired by other things.
As different my tracks are as different is the process of the production.
Clubxtrem) You have a special musical signature and recognized by all, you always seems to find the sound that makes the difference, especially in the bass and lead. For this approach on which support do you work, synths? VST ?
Oliver Huntemann) Thanks for approving the way I want to get my music identified. I work hard to give each track a face to make it recognizable even though I do make underground electronic music. You are right, my favourite tools are strong basslines converted into leads. I don't work with synthesizers anymore, just Logic plug-ins and VST. It's comfortable to work with and sounds great. I still keep my old synthesizers and drum-machines for sentimental reasons in the studio - unplugged. But wait, I connected my 909 for "Paranoia", to be exact for the snare-roll in "In Times Of Trouble". There is still no better way to edit snappy and attack than in the machine itself - if the potentiometers still work proper after all the years.
Clubxtrem) By the way do you have any favorite synths with whom you love work ?
Oliver Huntemann) Arturia, Albino and the Logic stuff.
Clubxtrem) Now a lot of people work only in software. What do you think people who do work with any hardware synthesizers and is it less credible for you ?
Oliver Huntemann) It's like with dj-set-ups nowadays, each artist can use the equipment he might work best with. It's about creativity and not about technique. Some work better with laptop studios other's with a step-sequencer, a Moog synthesizer and a huge analog mixer. Who cares if the result is great and catches you ?
Clubxtrem) What advice would you give to people who wish to take production or DJing ?
Oliver Huntemann) Limit yourself to a concise set up, get familiar with equipment, instruments and pieces of software - and practice, practice practice !
Clubxtrem) Tell us more about Reactable. How did you set up this live and especially how you're using this tool ?
Oliver Huntemann) Exactly one year ago, when I was in the middle of the album production, I thought about doing something special around the release. I knew the Reactable since a prototype was used for a Björk
concert few years ago and got in touch with the developers in Barcelona. I visited them two weeks later, they showed me the idea behind it and I immediately knew this is the gadget I want to play with. The Reactable is a new electronic musical instrument with a simple and intuitive design, which enables musicians to experiment with sound, change its structure, control its parameters and be creative in a direct, refreshing and unseen way. It uses a tabletop tangible interface, which allows the performers to control the system by manipulating tangible objects and with their fingers. The instrument is based on a translucent and luminous round table, and by putting these pucks on the Reactable surface, by turning them and connecting them to each other, performers can combine different elements like synthesizers, effects, sample loops or control elements in order to create a unique and flexible composition. Reactable's pucks represent the building blocks of electronic music, each one having a different functionality in sound generation or in effect processing, in a way deeply inspired by modular analogue synthesizers such as those developed by Bob Moog in the early 60s.
On the other side it's a bit like djing, I do the whole arrangement and mash-ups with the Reactable. I can combine my loops, effects and filters like I want in a different way. The attraction is, of course, the visual aspect of the Reactable. That's why we transfer live videos on screens. Additionally I'm standing in a lightcage which supports the whole performance.
Clubxtrem) After the release of your new album, what are your plans for 2012 ?
Oliver Huntemann) First of all I have a lot of touring the world with my live-show and dj-sets until summer 2012. I'm afraid that keeps me apart doing many other things. Dubfire and I are planning to continue our Elements series soon. "Aqua" and "Aire" have to be realized and I hope we gonna start asap. It's not easy to find slots when we're both in the studio at a similar time. Even we don't work in one studio together, it makes sense having time to work on the sessions soon. Beside this I already think about where I'd like to record the "Play! 4 live mix". Australia or Asia could be options.
Clubxtrem) Had you ever heard of Clubxtrem before this interview ?
Oliver Huntemann) Unfortunately no, but I saw many music themes which seems to me very important more than Facebook and Tweeter !
