Retro Acid is back for some bleeping late nigh treats ! Focusing on everything nice with that old TB-303 bass synth and a great bunch of live acts (and only 2 DJ-sets) it promises to be a spot on night compiled with raw sweat and grit sounds. Brace yourselves for bleeping pleasures and acid-drenched dancefloor filth, brought to you by these venue-filling personalities.
First one on the bill is Ceephax Acid Crew. This D.I.Y. artist is a full on modern day renaissance man that uses mainly vintage drum machines and synthesizers such as the TB-303. His music was released on vinyl records and cassette tapes on underground labels such as Breakin' Records, Lo Recordings and Firstcask but his remixes got picked up by big ones as Warp Records as well. From 2007 this acid lord (who is also known as Squarepusher's brother) has had full releases on the Rephlex and Planet Mu record labels. Ceephax has gained massive popularity with his live performances by stepping back from the popular laptop style and using exclusively analogue and early digital equipment and occasionally an Amiga computer. His sets range from old school house, acid, techno and drum and bass, and are most of the time a big psychedelic feast for your ears. For our Retro Acid night, he'll pull out his best acid tricks.
Paul Birken has to be considered as an underground techno legend. After his recent contribution on Mord, Earwiggle, OTTO and the follow up on the legendary Surfin Superior EP he's more in the game than ever. His releases on the legendary acid labels Communique Records and Drop Bass Network were each very important additions to the history of the genre. His signature sound is bleepy and raw, and we're pretty sure that you'll love his bomb-ass dance floor work-outs. We're thrilled to welcome this legend and representative of the USA Minnesota acid scene as our guest. Look out for Mr. Birken because he's hotter than hell.
X&trick describes his music as "Neo Rave", a mix of acid, electronica, techno, rave and hardcore which get blended in his fresh cocktail of beats, bass and melody. As the founder of the legendary Belgian "Dionysus" parties, he was the first one to make many new music styles clash in one line-up, introducing genres like breakcore, industrial, braindance, drill n bass into the Belgian scene. In 2004 X&trick created "Bug Klinik Records", which released his solo EP "Forever" and got well received by international press and scene. While he always tries to push boundaries in both his productions and his DJ-sets, he recently got into vintage synthesizers and drum machines, and as a result of that he will be playing his first live 303 set ever at this edition of Retro Acid.
Jacidorex is a young and upcoming producer from Brussels. He gained popularity with his track "Acid Vortex", released on Pureanalog and is a well-known artist in the Acid-scene. As his alter ego J. Rex, he dips his toes in the world of techno music as well, and where techno meets acid core, there comes neo acid. According to him, this is a new style of music including all kinds of acid, mixing old school machines and new hardware of music production, containing techno and industrial influences. The aim here is to break the new by making something with hard kicks and fat acids like acid core, but with the structure, progressivism and professionalism that marks techno music.
Xtor80 is one active bugger originally oriented in tekno-hardtek-acid-core. In 2002, he set up his highly praised Melomaniakz organisation, throwing shitloads of party's in Belgium. After a short break Xtor80 is back as the right hand of D-Fens (Noisy Bastards, NB99rec) throwing the Eskadron parties. In his current career he has also been an active part of the following organisations ; Nanotek, Melomaniakz, Protek, FoolMoon, Spaztik, Echopark, Eskadron, DDM Soundsystem & KMK Soundsystem.
D-Fens has made his mark in 1999 with the famous Noisy Bastards parties (hardtek / core) as a harder alternative to the current scene. After several years of hardcore and industrial core, he introduced Eskadron - which is more acid based, as an attempt to maintain that nostalgic feeling. Watch out for his B2B-set with Xtor80 !
Our resident Spacid is one of the earliest acid pioneers in Belgium. His first steps playing in front of a public date back to 1990. Four years later he founded Funky Green Aliens, a party organization and booking agency concentrating on promoting groundbreaking music & arts. The parties, mostly illegal, were very successful and still to this day represent the true roots of Spacid's DJ career. At Retro Acid he always goes back to this base which finds its roots in the 303 !
As always, you can expect a massive acid whirlwind, raging from 2 beaufort to maximum wind speed. Go get your acid wings !
